‘Nimasa Records 102 Sea Robbery Cases’
The Director General of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Mr. Ziakede Patric Akpobolokem has disclosed that a total of 102 armed sea robbery attacks and other related incident were reported last year.
Mr. Akpobolokem, was disclosed this during this year’s World Maritime Day celebration in Port Harcourt recently, said the attack who were reported from Lagos, Bonny, Calabar, Port Harcourt and Warri Pilotage District.
He said during the period, eight lives were lost with Lagos accounting for 45 of the reported piracy attacks.
According to him, the Agency also recorded various degrees of injuries to ship crew with loss of cash, shipboard equipment and properties worth over N443 million last year.
The Director General, who also presented a paper titled “Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery at sea in Nigeria Waters, the Effort of NIMASA So Far” during the occasion said, the body was worried over the casualty figures and is taking it very seriously by employing a number of strategies and tactics to curb these ugly incidents in the Nigeria territorial water.
Some of such measures, he said were signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Nigerian Navy in April, 2007 on security of the maritime domain, which according to him had led to the secondment of a detachment of the navy to the Agency under the Maritime Guard Command(MGC).
He further hinted that the Nigeria Air Force recently acquired ATR-42 Maritime Patrol Aircraft and to take advantage of this acquisition, the Agency and the Nigeria Air Force have concluded plans to establish a Joint Air unit to check piracy and armed robbery attacks against ships in the Nigeria Maritime area.
