Assembly Calls For LG Council Accounts
The Cross River State House of Assembly has given the Ogoja Local Government Council 60 days within which to furnish it with relevant vouchers and adjustment journal regarding mandates totaling N49,703,116.03 issued to the Ministry of Local Government Affairs during the year ended 31 December, 2007.
Our correspondent reports that the directive, which is part of recommendations of the House Committee on Public Accounts on the audited accounts of the Ogoja Local Government Council, is to enhance probity and accountability.
The committee recommendations, which were adopted by the House also directed that approval of Legislative Arm of Council be secured to write-off advances/imprest below the sum of N100,000 within the period under review and those standing against deceased officers.
Also, the House gave another ultimatum of 60 days to officers, who are yet to retire advances/imprest with effect from January 1, 2006 to show evidence of full retirements, failing which recovery should be effected from the monthly salaries of serving officers and through the Public Funds and Property Recovery Court in the case of former political office holders and those retired.
The report also recommended that the Director of Finance and Supplies and the Internal Auditor of Ogoja Local Government Council compile and forward to the House of Assembly the names of officers who are yet to retire advances/imprest standing against their names with effect from January 1, 2006 for further necessary action.
To this end, the Committee directed that the Ogoja Council should in future embark on projects within the limit of available funds to ensure completion, adding that Council Authorities must follow due process in all financial transactions and show prudence in the utilisation of Public funds.
It would be recalled that on July 24, 2008, the Auditor General for Local Government forwarded in a letter No. CRS/AGLG/122/VOL.II/178, to the House and was subsequently referred to the Public Accounts Committee for consideration.
