Team Rivers Celebrates Abula ‘Triple’ Victory
Rivers State athletes involved in Abula sports at the on-going Garden-CityGames yesterday erupted into wild jubilation over their triple victory in the Abula sports that ended yesterday.
Abula featured three games male, female and mix – double categories. The Rivers State contigent had earlier won the female and mix double before playing their last match in the male category which they won.
Abula sport always features five strength games in each category and in the men category, Rivers State took on Ondo State in the finals and won the first three games, a development that made the remaining two games a mere formality, that is even if Ondo wins the two games, Rivers will still emerge on 3-2 aggregate so the teams did not play the remaining two matches.
Wild jubilation rent the air as they screamed and hugged themselves, and their officials, with some dancing to the popular Duncan Mighty’s tune – Port Harcourt Boy” and other tunes.
A visibly elated athlete Miss Judith Thompson who plays for the Rivers Abule Team reacted in an interview with The Tide, saying, I feel very great; I feel honoured. We won because we prepared very well. We prepared our selves before coming to this competition. And I personally commit it into the hands of God, adding, “the implication of this victory is that our morale has been boosted to make Rivers State also proud at the next National Sports Festival in Lagos.
I am going to Lagos for the next festival and I am promising Rivers State that I am coming back with another gold medal for the state.”
Miss Thompson advised up coming Abula athletes that hope to make ‘Team Rivers’ of the future to be focussed, avoid desperation, attend trainings, take instruction from the coaches, be disciplined and the Lord will be their strength, and crown their effort with success.”
