Rivers Farmers Told To Access Fadama Grants
Farmers in Omuma Local Government Area, Rivers State have been urged to access the Fadama grants so as to increase their productivity and improve their living standards.
The Team Leader of Fadama Programme in the area, Hon. Kingsley Chigbu made the appeal in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt yesterday.
Hon. Chigbu explained that they could access the Fadama grants by contributing their counterpart fund through formation of farmers corporative societies. The Fadama team leader said that the inability of some farmer’s cooperative societies to pay their counterpart fund was hampering full utilization of the Fadama grants by farmers in the area.
He however disclosed that the sensitization programme embarked upon by his team in the 51 communities in the local government area has yielded positive result but insised that all farmers should have access to the Fadama grant in order to tackle hunger, poverty and unemployment threatening the world.
Describing Fadama programme as a novel vision, Hon. Chigbu who is an agricultural expert said that the programme has multiplier effect on the rural farmers especially in income generation, capacity to create employment and food production.
He commended the Rivers State government under the leadership of Rt. Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for investing in agricultural development and appealed to the government to replicate the Soghai farm establishment in Buno Tai in Tai Local Government Area in other parts of the state. In the same vein, he challenged youth of Rivers State to develop interest in agriculture pointing out most developed countries of the world have diversified into agricultural economy in order to meeting the Millennium Development Goals.
