Coach Hopes To Guide Son To Win Gold
Nasarawa Cycling Coach, Muhammad Babajada is full of hopes he can guide his son to a gold medal at the 17th National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt to continue the family tradition.
Babajada told newsmen Wednesday that his son, Ibrahim is capable of winning a gold medal in cycling just like he (Muhammad) did 23 years ago.
“It will be a sweet thing to do so in this same city of Port Harcourt just like I did 23 years ago,’’ he said.
Babajada is the cycling chief coach of the Nasarawa State Sports Council, while his son, Ibrahim is one of the cyclists he brought to the June 27 to July 10 festival.
Both of them were part of the opening day programme in the cycling event of the festival on Wednesday, with Ibrahim clinching a place in yesterday’s quarter-finals.
“I believe in him and I believe he can go on to get the gold medal. That way he will be following in my footsteps.
“Right here in Port Harcourt in 1988, at the festival, tagged “Rivers 88’’, I won a gold medal in the team time trial 100 kilometres event, and a silver in the road race for my State then, Plateau.
“Now, Ibrahim who is my first son has the potential as he has shown in his first outing here. Of course, he has it in him, as he won a bronze medal in the four kilometres team pursuit at the 2006 festival in Ogun State,’’ he said.
Babajada, who said he had represented Nigeria in cycling thrice and had won a number of medals for it, is also hopeful that his younger children would go on to follow in the footsteps of Ibrahim and himself.
“They are coming up and I am hoping that they will take to cycling and go on to do well like Ibrahim and I,’’ Babajada who is now in his 20th year in coaching cycling said.
