Civil Servants Assist Politicians In Corrupt Practices-LG Boss
The Transition Chairman, Etsako Central Local Government, Edo, Mr Suleiman Bagudu says some civil servants share in the widespread corruption in the third tier of government in the country.
The council boss, who stated this in an interview with newsmen at Fugar maintained that there was no way politicians could get away with fraudulent practices in councils without the assistance of the civil servants.
Bagudu who regretted that most council chairmen were ignorant about the job of civil servants, however, advised politicians to be wary of antics of some of the civil servants.
He argued that by understanding their job, the chairmen would be in a better position to perform effectively in serving the people.
Bagadu, who stressed the need for prudent management of resources and accountability for enhanced service delivery in councils, however said that “the media has a key role to play to ensure the desired development at the grass roots’’
He said: “The media has a role to play by going round, ensuring judicious utilisation of allocated resources to council areas and also acting as check and balances for development to take place in council areas.
“It is a common knowledge that paucity of fund has hampered development in the nation’s council areas, but then, local government bosses have to be prudent and accountable in the management of the resources allocated to them.
“There is need for the chairmen to always ensure that they cross check their books before endorsement, it is always the failure to do this that always brings about problem for council bosses.
“Many have conspired with civil servants and at the end of the day; it is the politician and not the civil servant that ends up being tried for fraud.
“Politicians cannot get away with fraud without the assistance of the civil servants”.
