VC Pledges Support For WRA
The Vice Chancellor of the Ignatus Ajuru University of Education (UOE), Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Prof. Rosemund Dienye Green Osahogulu, has pledged the institution’s support for the White Ribbon Alliance (WRA) for safe motherhood in its fight against maternal and infant mortality in the state.
Prof. Osahogulu, who made the pledge in her office when the executive of the Rivers State Chapter of the body led by its Co-ordination, Ms Gloria Harry paid her a courtesy/advoacay visit on Tuesday, expressed worry at the high rate of infant and maternal mortality in the state.
She disclosed that she was familiar with the campaign of the WRA during her days as a university lecturer adding that she carried out a lot of research and publications on teenage pregnancy which even attracted foreign donors.
“When I was a lecturer, I did some research work and publications and it was funded by Ford Foundation and Mac Arthur Foundation for 3 years, specifically on teenage pregnancy”, she explained.
She promised that the institution would mobilize the youths within the university environment to support the planned one million man march to be organized by the body.
Earlier, the Coordinator of WRA, Ms Gloria Harry, had intimated the Vice Chancellor of the organisation’s plan to organize a one million man march on July 27, 2011, in order to bring to the fore the challenges facing mothers and new born babies in the society.
She appealed to the university authority to mobilize the university community especially the youths to participate in the programme in order to achieve its target .
Also speaking, the Dean of Students Affairs, Mrs V.E. Okogba, pledged her support and that of the students in actualising the objectives of the WRA for safe motherhood in the state.
