Don Warns Of Tsunami In Nigeria
Tsunami, the deadly harbour wave that destroyed lives and properties in Japan and some parts of America and European countries is possible in Nigeria, Dr. Chibu Ugwor Eze has warned.
Dr. Eze, a research fellow with the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, (RSUST) in an interview with The Tide, said the possibility of every costal states and country to experience the harbour wave is high and that Nigeria is not left out of such earth tremor.
The University don noted that Tsunami is caused generally by submarine or coastal earthquakes and submarine landslides.
He listed submarine volcanic eruption, submarine explosions and large meteorites as other causes of harbour wave.
He recalled that an earth tremor had occurred in Nigeria, Ibadan specifically as early as 1936, insisting that the possibility of it re-occurring is very high.
He, however, urged the federal government to arm itself against possible occurrence of the harbour wave, stating that it would not cost the country anything if it starts preparing against it now.
The University lecturer said the cause of the frequent kerosene explosions in many parts of Nigeria was due to the adulteration of kerosene with high volatile component.
Dr. Eze advised the regulatory body to monitor and test all the products right from the loading to reduce the incidents of kerosene explosion even as he advised kerosene dealers to dispose contaminated products sincerely.
On the minimum wage recently announced by the Federal Government the lecturer said the wage is too small to sustain any Nigerian worker.
