Laptops For RSUST Engineering Students Underway
Plans are underway by the authorities in the Faculty of Engineering of Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) to ensure that each student own a laptop computer as directed by the council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
Speaking in an exclusive chat with The Tide on Thursday Dean, Faculty of Engineering of the University, Dr. Alex Akor said the authorities are working on modalities to implement the policy.
Already, the Faculty would soon commerce a special collaborative scheme with productive industries in the State in the area of research and development.
Dr. Akor said the scheme would cover all oil industries and other industrial firms, noting that once they get the support of the firms, it would be easy to implement the one student laptop policy.
He argued that it would be difficult to implement the COREN directive on the engineering students because a lot of them are indigent.
He stated that the faculty would begin visitation to some of the industries, especially those that require special engineering skills and see where they can collaborate with them on research and development.
Dr. Akor who urged that engineering has gone bond laboratory and classroom work, asserted that by COREN standards, engineering students are expected to compete with their counterparts outside the country to meet up modern challenges.
According to him, the directive was to elapse this year as it would be one of prerequisites for the approval of engineering studies in most universities across the country.
Dr. Akor therefore solicited the support of oil firms and other big companies to come to the aid of the faculty in the area of funding, research and scholarship, adding that such gesture would go a long way in improving knowledge.
