RSG Plans ‘Safe Haven’ For Rape Victims
The Rivers State Ministry of Women Affairs plans to establish a rehabilitation centre to cater for victims of sexual and domestic abuse in the state.
The planned centre tagged ‘Safe Haven Project” according to the Director, Women Affairs, Mrs Blessing Dienye was unveiled at the 13th Council Meeting of Women Affairs and Social Development held in Port Harcourt last week and it was meant to reduce the psychological trauma faced by victims of sexual violence.
The centre when finally established would equally house victims of domestic violence aimed at protecting the dignity of women.
In addition, the ministry hinted of its plans to establish a legal aid counselling department to handle cases of traumatised local women.
Though some of the proposals presented at the council meeting was amended, Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Alhaji Idris Kuta observed that some of the projects appeared to be a duplication of some of the activities of the ministry.
However, Mrs Dineye remarked that a fresh plan by the state ministry to build a leadership training centre for women would be implemented in order to provide leverage for affirmative action policy.
In her words, “ After many decades of the Beijing Conference, women are yet to get their rightful place in governance.
In a similar vein, the Rivers State Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation also plans a centre for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC).
The plans, according to Director of Child Welfare in the ministry, Mrs Grace Doku-Gin was in tandem with the plans of the federal ministry to establish new OVCs across the various states of the country.
Mrs Doku-Gin raised alarm on the increasing rate of teenage pregnancy, noting that the centre when established would cater for the needs of victimised young girls in the state.
About 140 memoranda were deliberated upon at the meeting while 28 were stepped down and only about 25 of the proposals were approved by council for immediate action. Only eight states attended the meeting.
