Politics: Expert Seeks Women Active Participation
An expert in Gender policy has advocated for a full participation of women in Nigeria politics.
Dr. Victoria Wilson of Komfort Consults made the call recently while presenting paper at a two-day sensitisation workshop on National Gender Policy and voter education for women in the South-South Geo-Political Zone.
Wilson said that politics in Nigeria without the full participation of Women who constitute about half of a country’s population amounted to neglecting a reasonable number of the population from taking valuable decisions for the development of the country.
“Remember that women constitute half of the Nigerian population, and proper development cannot take place with half of the population excluded. No democracy is complete without women”, she declared.
Dr. Wilson who is a Managing Consultant and partner of Komfort Consult harped on the importance of women in governance and planning.
“Women are effective in promoting honest government, and a national parliament with the largest number of women have the lowest levels of corruption”, according to World Bank.
The national gender policy, she said was intended to promote equality, equity and fair treatment of men and women by increasing participation of women in governance and decision making and called on Nigerian women to be more involved in politics as the 2011 general election draw closer.
She, however, urged the women to participate in the electoral process starting with the voters registration exercise.
