‘Private Jetties Pose, Security Threat To Nigeria’
Proliferation of Private Jetties and its associated illegal activities is posing a security threat to the country inspite of the federal government’s efforts to curb their activities.
A Port Harcourt –based shipping executive, Nelson Lanre made the remark in an interview with The Tide on Tuesday in Port Harcourt.
According to him, “inspite of the fact that they are everywhere in the country, they are more pronounced in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Calabar and in a bid to curb their nefarious activities the federal government has set up an eight member committee last year to look critically at their operations across the country. The committee on jetties has as its chairman, the Deputy Director, Coastal and Ports Administration, Federal Ministry of Transport, Mrs. Chinwe Ezenwa.”
Lanre who is the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Nelson Shipping Agency Limited, pointed out that in a public notice, the management of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said by the provision of section 12 (1) and (4) of the Customs and Exercise Management Act Cap .C. 45 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, only areas designated by order of the president shall be a place of arrival or departure of ships by sea to and from foreign, for customs purposes. Places so designated are called Customs ports.
The customs high command, he continued, also said the master of a ship entering Nigeria by sea from any place outside Nigeria shall not cause or permit the ship to call at any place therein other than a customs port and any person importing or concerned in importing any goods by sea shall not bring the goods into Nigeria at any place other than a customs port.
He further said that the law says unlawful berthing of ships from foreign countries at unauthorised locations pose security threat to the nation since it could lead to trafficking of arms and ammunitions, as well as huge loses of collectable government revenues.
