Lawmaker Backs De-Registration Of Political Parties
A member, Delta House of Assembly Mrs Onyemaechi Mrakpor, has said that INEC should deregister parties that fail to perform in 2011.
Mrakpor, who represents the Aniocha South Constituency in the state, made the remark at forum in Asaba.
According to reports, Mrakpor got the ticket on the platform of the Accord Party in 2007, but defected to the PDP early in 2009.
The legislator, who was reacting to question on the proliferation of political parties in the country, said that it was expected of every party to work and justify the reason for being a party.
According to her, each political party should be able to work hard and win a seat at the general election to remain relevant because elections are not won by proxy.
“If you are a political party and you are not winning, why are you there?
“There is something I must give to PDP, if you look around now PDP has started its movement and other political parties are not moving.
“I left the PDP to go to the Accord Party when I was not given the ticket and I made sure I campaigned and I won.
“So if any political party is not able to win any seat why is it occupying a building,’’ she said.
Mrakpor said that she was not contemplating any opposition from her people in 2011 general election, except for position seekers.
She advised politicians to be credible because in politics there was nothing to hide.
“God gives power not man and if anyone wants to stand for an election he should be credible for there is nothing to hide in politics.
“I believe as politicians we should sow for the future, I don’t subscribe to those who say they cannot do this for their people because they are not going for an election.
“But if you sow, whether or not you are seeking a position by the time you are ready to seek a position your people will support you,’’ she said.
