Tokumbo Tyres: FRSC Warns Against Use
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Delta has warned drivers and commercial motorcycle operators against the use of second hand tyres.
The FRSC Unit Commander in Kwale, Delta, Mr Bethel Njoku, gave the warning at a “pre-ember” months rally organised for motorists, commercial motorcyclists and pedestrians in the area on Tuesday.
Njoku advised motorists to always ensure that their vehicles were road worthy by fixing new tyres instead of second-hand tyres otherwise known as “Tokumbo” or “Belgium” to avoid tyre burst.
He explained that the theme of the campaign, “I Am Precious To My Family, Drive With Care”, was apt as preparation for the Christmas celebration would soon commence.
The commander also cautioned road users against driving when drunk, adding that the use of drugs and other intoxicants were agents of road crashes that should be avoided.
He said that over-speeding, which usually led to dangerous driving and overtaking was common among commercial drivers.
Overloading of vehicles with people and materials were other causes of road crashes, Njoku said.
He said the objective of the rally was to re-orientate road users on ways to prevent accidents on the road.
He warned drivers to be careful during the Christmas when traffic was usually high.
Responding on behalf of the participants, Mr Edward Osakwe, who represented the Chairman of the NURTW in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, gave the assurance that drivers would comply with traffic regulations.
He said that they would partner with FRSC “in order to stay alive during the festive period and beyond”.
