New Minimum Wage: Rivers Civil Servants Await FG Circular
As the new minimum wage approved by the Federal Government for civil servants continues to generate anxiety and goodwill, the Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), has appealed to civil servants in the state to exercise patience until the federal government releases a circular and chart to that effect.
The state chairman, Comrade Opuoyibo Lilly-West who made the appeal in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt said it was not proper for the workers to now indulge in rumours over the matter or to jump to conclusion that the state government was not going to pay the newly approved minimum wage.
Expressing optimism that the state Governor, Rt Hon Chibiuke Rotimi Amaechi was going to pay the new wage, the union leader urged civil servants to remain calm, civil and law-abiding and await the federal government’s circular and chart over the matter.
He explained that it was on the strength of dispelling rumours that the state government was not going to pay the new minimum wage that he summoned an enlarged emergency meeting of the union last Wednesday to discuss the matter and other sundry issues affecting members.
“I called an emergency meeting for us to look at the way forward, where we are and where we are going to. For us to discuss the new minimum wage that makes the rounds all over the country, that our governor is willing to pay. And that there is no cause for alarm. Saying that the governor will not pay is creating unnecessary tension. We need to be civil, disciplined and wait for the federal government to come up with a circular and a chart on that issue”, he declared.
Comrade Lilly-West also announced that civil servants in the state would participate in the forth coming 2010 Civil Service Week which he said was postponed in June following the murder of the Chairman of the state Civil Service Commission, Chef Anthony Egobueze.
