NBTE Calls For Review Of Syllabi
The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has called on the Federal Government to review the obsolete syllabi for the curricula on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) used by technical colleges in Nigeria.
Speaking at the opening of National Curriculum Review workshop for the 13 trades and General Education Courses in Akure, Ondo State, the Acting Executive Secretary of NBTE, Mr Ade Oyo Aimola said the syllabi of these subjects were produced eight years ago.
According to him, due to rapid technological advancement, the syllabi have become obsolete. He stated that the review of the syllabi became necessary in order to make the technical education being taught in schools relevant to the developmental needs of the country.
Aimola, who was represented by Chief Gabriel Adewale, the Former Director of Personnel of NBTE, said the lefty goals of technical and vocational education would be a pipe dream without a review of the curriculum in all institutions in Nigeria. He said the Board had reviewed and developed curricula and course specification for 278 programmes at National Diploma, Higher National Diploma, and professional post HND levels covering engineering environmental studies, business and related studies.
Some of the courses to be affected, according to him, include Electrical Installation, Radio and Television Work, Computer Studies, English, Mathematics, Technical drawing, Entrepreneurship and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
In his remark, the Director of NBTE, Mr James Aboi, said the skills training and vocational education was conceived and designed with the goal of poverty reduction and subsequent eradication in the country.
