Cleric Urges Respect For Human Rights
Outgoing Bishop of Niger Delta Diocese (Anglican Communion) Rt. Rev. Gabriel Pepple has charged political leaders in the country to respect and protect human rights of the down-trodden in society.
Rev. Pepple gave the charge in a chat with The Tide shortly after dedicating Kalama Group of Churches in Opobo during his Episcopal visit to the area over the weekend.
The Anglican bishop submitted that the fundamental rights of the people are important in any democracy and therefore should be accorded respect at all times.
On the other hand, he observed that citizens should also respect constituted authorities and advise their leaders when they go astray.
He stated that the people should understand that no ruler or leader is perfect hence they should always seek God’s guidance for their leaders.
Reliving his experience as Bishop of the Niger Delta Diocese, Rt. Rev. Pepple maintained that God has given him the grace to surmount the numerous challenges that came his way, adding: “the tenure has been glorious and I have been able to accomplish most of my visions for the diocese”.
Rt. Rev. Pepple averred that as the oldest diocese in this part of the country, it has given birth to two provinces signalling good omen for the future of the Anglican Church in the country.
Declining comments on the recent consecration of a gay bishop in the Episcopal Church of America, Rt. Rev. Pepple charged the Church to hold on tight to God’s word to surmount challenges, noting that the church is on the verge of self realization.
The Tide reliably gathered that Rt. Rev. Pepple who is currently on farewell visits to archdeaconries under his Diocese may retire next month.
