Bendel Breweries: Labour May Battle Govt Over Sacked Workers
The Edo Government may face the wrath of the organised labour over the “maltreatment’’ of 90 workers of the state-owned Bendel Breweries.
The National Union of Food Beverage and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE), the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are protesting against the treatment meted out to the workers.
The unions noted that the 90 workers were sent on one-month compulsory leave on April 28, 2008 under the guise that the company was undergoing a turn-around maintenance and stressed that the workers had yet to be recalled.
The unions decided to engage the Edo Government over the matter on Thursday in Benin at an extra-ordinary meeting.
In a statement given to newsmen in Benin, the leadership of NLC TUC and NUFBTE frowned at the government’s approach in handling the issue.
The unions said that a seven-member committee had been set up to work out the modalities of the industrial action.
They particularly criticised the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mrs Cordelia Aiwezie, for her attitude toward the brewery workers.
They recalled that in their meetings with the commissioner, they expressed their views on the issue and requested that Gov. Adams Oshiomhole should be well briefed on the discussions.
They also alleged that the commissioner failed to attend the last meeting they scheduled for Thursday, June 3.
