Ukpo Assures On Rivers Monorail Project
Managing Director of the Rivers State Monorail Company, Gen. Anthony Ukpo (Rtd.) has assured that the project will create sustainable job opportunities for the people of the state.
Gen Ukpo, who said this while briefing newsmen on the activities of TSI International and the state monorail project, said every effort was being put in place to ensure that the project brings holistic and sustainable development to the state.
According to him, the people of the state deserve a transportation system that can be trusted, convenient and has precision for time, stressing that the monorail is one of such modern transportation systems that can guarantee the desired value.
He applauded the state governor Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi and his team for accepting to make Port Harcourt the first state to have a modern monorail service in Nigeria, assuring that, the project will reduce incidents of traffic congestion in high density areas of the state capital, on completion.
“We are expecting to commence operation with about four to five coaches that have the capacity to convey 300 passengers each”, he said, while calling on the people to support the project to succeed.
Gen. Ukpo, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of TSI property international, assured that the partners to the project are committed to actualising it.
In his speech, the state Commissioner for Transport, Hon. George Tolojari said the state monorail project is a product of a partnership between TSI property and the State Government.
Hon. Tolofari, who commended the doggedness and determination of the partners in commencing the on-going soil test, said, the state government owns, 20% of the equity, while TSI has the remaining 80%.
He assured that the project would create employment for both skilled and unskilled manpower as well as provide avenues for investments in the sector.
Our correspondent reports that the ground breaking ceremony for the project was performed by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan penultimate Thursday in Port Harcourt.
