Spill Hits Mobil’s Qua Iboe Oil Field
Barely 38 days after the last oil spill that contaminated Ibeno shoreline in Akwa Ibom, another spill has been reported at the Qua Iboe offshore platform.
Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, an affiliate of U.S. oil firm ExxonMobil, has confirmed that a pipeline leakage from one of its offshore platforms discharged not yet ascertained volume of crude into the Atlantic ocean.
The confirmation was contained in a statement issued by MPN,s External Affairs Director, Mrs Gloria Essien-Danner and made available to our correspondence in Eket in Akwa Ibom on Tuesday.
Danner said in the statement that the source of the crude leakage had been identified and isolated.
It was learnt that crude from the faulty pipeline has been diverted to other pipelines to contain further discharge and avoid shut down of oil production.
The statement said that relevant government and regulatory authorities had been notified while a joint inspection of the incident site by MPN, regulatory authorities and host community has been scheduled. “MPN re-states its commitment to maintaining high safety, health and environmental standards in our operations and it is committed to the wellbeing of our neighbouring communities,” it stated
Sources at the National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), told our source that the agency had yet to get the report of the incident. Obong Ukot Ukot, Village Head of Atia Community in Ibeno Local Government Area, host community to Mobil’s Qua Iboe Terminal in Akwa Ibom, said the spill hit shoreline on Monday. “We noticed the oil spill on Monday at the coastline and it has contaminated the land with resultant impact on the environment and marine life.
“This is a sad news for the fishing community because our fishermen cannot go to sea until the clean-up is carried out,’’ Ukot said.
Members of the community were seen at the Ibeno beach discussing the spill. Mobil runs the 960,000 barrels per day capacity crude oil export terminal off Akwa Ibom shoreline with more than 90 offshore platforms in its oil blocks in a joint venture with NNPC.
