LIRS To Prosecute 25 Persons For Breaking Seal
The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), on Friday arrested Chima Idika of IDSAM Nig. Ltd. for allegedly breaking government seal and evading tax to the tune of N13.2 million .
Idika, who is a clearing and forwarding agent in Apapa was arrested by operatives of the State CID, Panti, after several attempts to arrest him failed.
Reports said that the suspect’s office was sealed off by LIRS sometime in November, 2009 after several reminders by LIRS to pay his tax failed.
But Idika was alleged to have broken the government seal and went into hiding since then until he was seized on Friday.
The Assistant Legal Adviser, LIRS, Mrs Afolashade Afolayan said that it was wrong to brake government seal.
“It is a criminal offence to break government seal once it had been placed on a door.
“Tax payers should observe due diligence when dealing with tax issues because it is the responsibility of everybody to pay tax,’’ she said.
Afolayan urged tax payers to ensure they paid their taxes promptly to avoid embarrassment by the state tax enforcement team.
She added that those arrested for breaking government seals would be prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others.
The Tide source gathered that 25 people had so far been arrested as at March 26, for breaking government seals.
