RSG Vows To Promote Science Education
The Rivers State Government has pledged to give more attention to the teaching and learning of science and technology courses in schools.
The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Charles Gogo Levi said this in an interview with newsmen shortly after the formal handing over ceremony of science equipment and Obolo language teaching modules to secondary and primary schools by the Andoni Cluster Development Board in Port Harcourt.
The Commissioner said that the gesture will impact positively on the educational development of Andoni and urged the benefiting schools to put them into judicious use.
Also speaking, the Government and Community Affairs Manager East of the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), Mr. Theo Wellington said that the Andoni Cluster Development Board has distinguished itself as one of the best in the state.
Mr. Wellington who was represented by Mr. Tony Attah said that the cordial relationship between the company and the board will continue to yield fruitful results.
In his welcome address, the chairman of the Board Chief (Hon) God Ekpirikpo said that the board which is the largest in Rivers State has the least allocation of funds, stressing that this situation has hampered its developmental effort.
Chief Ekpirikpo also said that the board which is made up of 20 communities is being faced with the challenges posed by some communities that were excluded from the present arrangement.
According to him, this situation has necessitated the need for a review of the funding as well as the creation of new cluster for the yet to be clustered Andoni communities in the second phase of the Group Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU).
He commended the Rivers State Government for its bold effort at educational development, while also thanking SPDC for its support.
The event also featured the presentation of cheques to beneficiaries of the board’s micro credit scheme.
The benefiting schools are: Government Secondary School Ngo, Community Secondary School Ibot-Irem, Community Secondary School Unyeada and Community Secondary School Ikuru Town.
The rest are: Government Comprehensive Secondary School Ataba, Community Secondary School Ebukuma, Community Secondary School Agwut-Obolo and Government Secondary School Asarama.
