Itsekiri’s Embrace Amnesty
In a determined effort to key into the Federal governments amnesty disarmament programme in Delta state, the Itsekiri nation through the Itsekiri National Youth Council (INYC) has surrendered a large cache of arms, even as they claimed not to be militants.
The amnesty programme October 4 deadline stipulated by the federal government for the amnesty programme gradually drawing to a close has necessitated the large turn out of militants in the surrendering of arms.
In Koko, Warri North local government area of Delta state, the Itsekiri nation turned-in their arms yesterday through a mop-up of arms in the Itsekiri communities both in Delta and Edo states respectively.
Arms turned in to the amnesty team include eight General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG), 49 AK 47, 25 FN, four pistols, 28 dynamites, eight dane guns, 11 pump action, 22 G3, one RPG and a live round, four SMG and a large number of magazines and ammunition.
A statement presented by the Itsekiri nation through the Itsekiri National Youth Council (INYC) and read by Barr. Tsewo Edema exclaimed that the “the Itsekiri people should not have been associated with this sad and painful occasion”, but that they have keyed in because the federal government demand on amnesty is total.
In a seven point demand, the INYC called on the beef up of security in itsekiriland, immediate construction of roads projects, rebuilding of destroyed towns and villages, reclamation of lands seized by neighboring militant communities, as well as protection of lives and properties.
