Council Seals Another 25 Fake Labs
The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria has sealed another 25 medical laboratories in Rivers State in continuation of its sanitation efforts across the country.
This action is in addition to the 24 sealed earlier this year during the council’s first ever inspection of medical laboratories in the state.
In an interview with The Tide On Sunday last Friday, shortly after an interactive session between representatives of the Medical Laboratory Scientist Council and members of the Rivers State chapter, Dr Chris Mbata, chairman of the state chapter of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, said a total of 74 laboratories were inspected during the just-concluded exercise.
According to Dr Mbata, the three-day inspection which saw the regulatory body inspecting laboratories in Oyigbo last Monday and Tuesday, and Mile III to Rumuokoro on Wednesday, recorded a major discovery in addition to the general ones that warrant sealing.
He explained that in one of the laboratories that was sealed in Rumuokoro an assistant was caught in the act of setting up a drip for a female patient, while her husband waited.
“This man is not even a technician, not to talk about a laboratory scientist, but he has turned the laboratory, which was also operating illegally, into a mini clinic.
“When we saw this, we took a video coverage of the scenario and found out that the operator of the laboratory called “Calvary Specialist Laboratory”, came in from Aba and just opened it,” he said.
Mbata thus warned the public that “it is not the duty of a laboratory scientist to set up drip for patients. Our duty is to carry out investigation on the patient, find out what the problem is, and send the result to a clinician, who will decide on the appropriate treatment.”
Dr Mbata who expressed satisfaction over the first and second phases of the inspection by the council noted that about three more inspections would be carried out before the whole of Port Harcourt would be covered.
A total of 141 laboratories have so far been inspected in Port Harcourt, out of which 49 had been sealed.
Meanwhile, some of the first 24 laboratories that were sealed, but met the standard set by the regulatory body may be re-opened this week.
