One Out Of Ten Nigerian Mentally Ill -Expert
Psychiatric aliment is now having a toll on the citizenry as one out of every 10 Nigerian is said to have mental challenge.
The statistics was revealed by Dr. Ayodeji Oluwasheun a Senior registrar and Resident Neuro Psychiatric doctor with the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, (UPTH) Port Harcourt, as part of 2018 World Mental Health Day.
Dr. Oluwasheun in a chat with The Tide further revealed that depression is one of the highest mental aliment faced by Nigerians, as a result of economic down turn and modern living pressures.
“Globally depression is the number four aliment behind hypertension, diabetes and cancer, but the World Health Organisations (WHO) has projected that by 2020 depression will rise to number two in the global disease burden”, Oluwashenu stated.
In the same vein, Dr. Chukwuwa Okeafor, Head of the Department New Psychiatric Department of UPTH noted that one third of those who visit the hospital have depression symptoms.
He explained that some of the signs include low mood, lack of interest in pleasantly pleasurable activities, insomnia, lack of appetite and feeling of hopelessness.
Dr. Okeafor added, “from hopelessness one feels worthless and begins to nurse a death wish, suicidal thoughts and finally commits suicide”.
Explaining that mental ailment has no age limit, Dr. Oluwasheun pointed out that most psychiatric problems occur before the age of 14 years and about 75 per cent will be evident before the age of 24 years.
