RSU Reads Riot Act To 3,795 Students
The authorities of the Rivers State University (RSU), Port Harcourt have warned 3,795 newly admitted students for various courses of study to desist from any act that could jeopardise their academic career in the institution.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Blessing Didia gave the advice while speaking at the 36th Matriculation ceremony held at the Convocation Arena last Wednesday in Port Harcourt.
Didia told the matriculating students that the university management and the Senate seriously frown at nocturnal and clandestine associations or groups in the school, adding that the penalty for any student found to be a member was expulsion.
He cautioned them to beware of any overture to lure them into joining those proscribed groups in the university, and added that the Senate also abhors all forms of examination malpractices.
“You should learn to take your studies seriously from the onset, and do the first thing first, so as to avoid doing the last things first”, the vice chancellor said, and reminded the students that it was an honour for them to be offered admission out of the legion who applied for admission into the university.
“Today, the university is matriculating a total number of 3,795 students carefully selected through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) admission criteria into the various departments of the institution, out of a total of 17,918 candidates who chose the university as first choice.
“As you progress, you should expect to engage in more rigorous academic activities. This will require your perseverance, studiousness, commitment and dedication to your academic life. These attributes will lead to success and eventual graduation, which is the object of your mission in the university.
“The university system is a balanced society. Although we emphasise academics, we also encourage the students to socialize.
“There are two recognised centres of worship in the university, the Chapel of Redemption (Protestant Chaplaincy) and our seat of wisdom, Catholic Chaplaincy). These two places are very ready to attend to your spiritual needs. You can also identify with registered clubs through the Students Affairs Office. This is intended to allow the students go through the university as well as allow the university go through them”, Didia added.
