STAN Confab:RSG Sponsors 400 Science Teachers
The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has approved the sponsorship of 400 science teachers across the state for the week-long Science Teachers Association (STAN) Conference in Port Harcourt.
Wike announced the plan when he played host to STAN National Executive Council led by Malam Mohammed Moulud at Government House, yesterday, in Port Harcourt, saying the aim was to boost their capacity and skills as science teachers.
The governor emphasized that science education remain a bedrock to Nigeria’s development, while recalling that as supervising minister of education, he ensured that all Federal Government Colleges are equipped with science laboratories as a way of encouraging science education.
He said, “There is need for incentive to study Science and Mathematics, if we want to get it right as a nation.”
Wike explained that in the state, his administration has equally started equipping schools with science facilities, noting that already, five schools have taken off as model schools in the project.
According to him, the schools include Government Secondary School, Rumuokwuta; Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori; Nyemoni Gramma School, Abonnema; Comprehensive Secondary School, Borokiri; and Government Girls Secondary School, Ogu.
The governor, who harped on the motivation of science teachers to encourage teaching and learning of science, assured that the state government will do everything to ensure that teachers get adequate training and up-to-date knowledge.
He challenged STAN to live up to expectation in ensuring that the country’s science and technology know-how was upgraded always, as he underscored science as the bedrock of any meaningful development.
On his part, Malam Moulud intimated the governor that they were in the state for their 60th conference with the theme, “Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Society.”
Moulud said STAN was formed in 1957 with the aim of promoting co-operation among science teachers, provide forum for discussion and to popularise science among other goals.
He used the visit to plead on the governor to always give support to the plans and programmes of the association, as he disclosed that Wike has been bestowed as the patron of the body.
