Repair S’East, S’South Federal Highways Now, Group Tells FG
The Southern Nigeria Peoples Mandate (SNPM), a human rights organisation has drawn the attention of the Federal Government towards total infrastructural decay of federal roads in the South-East and South-South regions of the country.
SNPM mentioned some of the roads as the Port Harcourt-Owerri Road, Enugu-Okigwe-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt expressway; Nnewi-Amichi-Unubi-Uga-Akokwa-Arondizuogu-Umulolo-Okigwe federal highway; Enugu-Awka-Onitsha expressway; Aba-Ikot Ekpene highway; Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene highway; Ugep-Adim-Uyanga-Calabar federal highway; Asaba-Benin dual carriageway and Itu-Odukpani-Calabar federal highway.
In a press statement in Onitsha, Anambra State shortly after their emergency meeting, President of the group, Augustine Chukwudum, lamented that these roads have been abandoned for the past 20 years, but during political campaign and electioneering periods, they would be used as tools for political campaigns and once the election is over, elected office holders would sweep them under the carpet.
SNPM said the dilapidated condition of these roads has become too inexplicable that they decided to raise this alarm for the present administration to look into them because the masses are dying on these roads on daily basis through fatal accidents as a result of their total collapse.
According to the statement, “Let the Federal Government wake up to its responsibilities by doing what they are expected to do on these roads. We are raising this alarm because the current administration is not doing anything to alleviate the sufferings of the masses who are going through hell on these roads.
“The only way to stop further wastages of peoples’ lives is for the Federal Government to commence work on these roads with immediate effect”, the statement concluded.
