Published

on

The Vice-Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Prof. Joseph Kinane,  has assured students of the institution that renovation works were on going to ensure that they have befitting hostel accommodation to inhabit.
Prof. Kianee who gave the assurance when he received the 2015/2016 Students Union Government executives in his office, appealed to the students to be calm and patient, noting that the management had embarked on facility tour around the three campuses and  noticed the deplorable state of the hostels and decided to restore them  to habitable condition before allocating them to students.
He promised that as soon as the renovation works were completed, the students would occupy the hostels.
The Chief Executive regretted the inconvenience caused the students who now come from their various homes and said that they would be proud of the outcome of the inconvenience in the long run.
He intimated the SUG executives about the expected accreditation exercise by the National Universities Commission (NUC) whose entourage he said was made up of core staff of the commission, distinguished scholars in education, sciences, social sciences, vocational technology and other high powered delegation expected for the exercise.
Professor Kinanee informed them that students cannot be admitted into any departments that do not attain full accreditation and that lecturers in such departments too would be idle as facilities as well as personnel are part of areas of consideration by the NUC.
He stated that the new inaugurated tenth governing council had been communicated to talk to the State Governor to help the institution with funds for the exercise as contractors handling most of the projects were using their personal funds to embark on them with assurances of reimbursement when the  state government provides funds to the university.
The Vice-Chancellor also appealed to them to pay their school fees through the bank instead of the usual online option as certain anomalies were revealed during the on line payment by some students and was being investigated. He told them to feel free to come to him any time to ask questions or seek clarification on any issue as his administration was operating  an open door policy.
He urged them to make the best out of their stay and to know that their primary objective of being in  IAUE was to study,  adding that their parents should have something to show for sending them to the university at the end of their stay if they worked hard.
The Vice-Chancellor who said that IAUE had produced people in highly placed positions encouraged them to combine academic excellence with unionism and to shun cultism, examination malpractice and impersonation. He thanked them for the visit and invited them to attend the first upcoming inaugural lecture of the institution.
The President of the Student Union Government, Comrade Eche Lukcy Chinoso thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the platform provided to explain plans of the management to the students and clarify certain issues that they were in the dark about and promised to explain them to the students.
He expressed optimism that by next year, everything would be put in place for them to move into the hostels and comfortable classrooms which he said would provide a conducive learning environment.

PDP Kicks As APC Wins FCT Council Polls

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has inaugurated a special legal team to handle election petitions arising from last Saturday’s Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory.

This comes as the All Progressives Congress (APC) won in Abaji, Kwali, AMAC, and Bwari Area Councils, while the PDP secured victory only in Gwagwalada.

The Tide reports that the council elections were held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, across all six FCT area councils, including Abaji, AMAC, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali.

Results announced so far by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) show that the All Progressives Congress (APC) won in Abaji, Kwali, AMAC, and Bwari Area Councils, while the PDP secured victory only in Gwagwalada.

In a statement issued yesterday by PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the party congratulated its candidates, who emerged winners in the chairmanship and councilor elections.

The opposition party acknowledged the victories, noting that the number of wins was lower than expected but significant given the alleged irregularities during the polls.

“We specifically congratulate the Chairman-elect of Gwagwalada Area Council, Mohammed Kasim, and the councillors who have been declared successful by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“This victory, though less in number than we anticipated, is particularly gladdening because it is against the background of unprecedented intimidation, high-powered money politics, and brazen executive brigandage,” the statement read.

Ememobong claimed that there are reports and video evidence indicating voter intimidation and unlawful conduct that influenced the outcome of the elections.

“Reports and video evidence abound where armed security personnel were used to cart away result sheets in polling units, intimidate voters, and unduly influence the outcome of the elections.”

To address complaints and litigations arising from the polls, he said the party has set up a legal team headed by its National Legal Adviser, Shafi Bara’u, Esq.

The statement urged candidates with legitimate grievances to contact the Legal Adviser promptly, as delays could jeopardise their chances in election petition cases.

“The incredible voter apathy in these polls is a direct response to the anti-people Electoral Act 2026, where the people have completely lost faith in the electoral outcomes from elections conducted under this Act.

“These Local Council polls may just be a foreshadowing of the forthcoming general elections in 2027 if changes are not urgently made,” the statement added.

The PDP called on the National Assembly and the President to take corrective action to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.
