… Advocates Collective Effort Against Corruption
Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State says that the fight against corruption requires the collective effort of all Nigerians.
Governor Amaechi made the assertion, Monday, in a keynote address during a two-day South-South Dialogue and policy sensitisation workshop in Port Harcourt, with the theme: “Achieving Growth with Equity”, organised by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Nigeria Governors’ Forum.
The governor said the fight against corruption cannot be won if left in the hands of one organisation but requires collaborative effort of all Nigerians in the various segments of society.
He decried a situation where some Nigerians criticise serving government officials only to do worst things when they have similar opportunity, noting that society should make fair assessment of the government with a view to institutionalising efforts to reduce corruption in public life.
Governor Amaechi identified wrong values as part of problems militating against fight on corruption, emphasising that improved manpower can be generated when there is a shift from paper qualification to knowledge-based qualification.
According to the governor, the state government approved UNDP to conduct an institutional study of governance in the state on five of its ministries, namely, health, education, finance, budget and works; to assess their strength and weaknesses, pointing out that the Executive Council would analyse the study.
He highlighted the achievements of the state in the education and health sectors, arguing that both institutions cannot be divorced from one another because providing affordable access to healthcare and education should be the top priority of government.
Governor Amaechi commended the Federal Ministry of National Planning and UNDP for accepting to organise the forum which would afford participants the opportunity to improve their skills.
In a goodwill message, the Minister of National Planning, Dr Shamsuddeen Usman said the 2008/2009 Nigerian Human Development report presents a repository of information on the state of affairs of the nation’s social and economic indicators that could underline the development aspiration of the various federal units in the country.
