C’River Unveils Sustainable Environment, Natural Management Policy
The Cross River State Government has unveiled a policy to enhance sustainable natural resources and environmental management in the state.
The policy was unveiled at a one-day validation workshop organised by the state Environment Ministry in partnership with the Project for Prevention of Marine Litters in the Gulf of Guinea (PROTEGO) in Calabar.
The Director, Environmental Quality Control in the ministry, Mr. Akpa Akpa, said the policy provided a framework for an integrated approach to sustainable environmental management.
Akpa stated that the policy would strengthen the legal and institutional framework for effective management of the environment and natural resources.
“This draft environment policy will ensure sustainable management of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems for improved livelihood and economic growth of the state.
“The policy will promote research, capacity development, and the use of innovative environmental management tools”, he said.
Also speaking, the Regional Project Director, PROTEGO, Mr. Clems Ugorji, said Cross River was globally known to harbour rare species of aquatic animals.
He said the need to implement a robust policy aimed to protect the state’s habitat could not be over emphasised.
“What we need next is an effective transition to a circular economy for waste management in the state. Poor waste disposal is becoming a challenge across the nation.
“So it is important for us to ensure that waste does not become a nuisance, but transformed into industrial materials that can create wealth for the citizenry”, he said.
A Researcher at the Forest Research Institute of Nigeria, Ms Ruth Akagu, described the draft policy as “rich in content and all encompassing”, stressing that it connected plants, animals and humans.
Akagu said greater effort should be invested into protecting and safeguarding the environment because humans depended more on it for survival.
According to him, the policy would help Cross River to mitigate the effects of harmful and unfriendly environmental practices.
It would be recalled that Project PROTEGO is funded by the German Government, and implemented on pilot basis in Nigeria and Ghana.
In Nigeria, the project is being implemented in Lagos and Cross River to curb littering of marine bodies.
