NIMECHE Wants Govt To Employ Guidance Counsellors In Schools
The Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMECHE) has blamed wrong choices of career by students on lack of guidance counsellors in schools.
State Chairman of the institution, Engineer Promise Jumbo, said this during a career talk at Enitonia High School, Borokiri in Port Harcourt.
The institution also called for the employment of guidance counselor in schools.
Jumbo said the career talk was part of the corporate social responsibility of the institution, adding that students should be encouraged to go for courses that they can do better.
“We have a career talk at Enitonia High School; we discussed with senior secondary school students about their career path outside the secondary school because by next year, they will be writing their WAEC to universities”, he said.
Jumbo later told newsmen that the institution deemed it necessary to galvanise the students, especially their interest in the Engineering profession.
He also described Mechanical Engineering as the bedrock of all Engineering discipline in the society.
“It is the foundation of Engineering profession, so we went to the school, met with the students, held sessions with them, and the students were happy because they were better informed about their career path as they go into teritary institutions.
He listed some of the programmes carried out by the institution to include, visit to companies to solicit for partnership with the institution, and students competition in the Rivers State University.
He commended the students and management of Enitonia High School for the warm reception and hospitality accorded the delegation, and assured them of support.
