Oil Unions Threaten Strike Over Sack Of Workers
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASAN), and the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) have threatened to shut down the petroleum sector over plans by Chevron Nigeria Limited to sack its members in the company’s.
In a reaction to the planned sack, the national executive of the two unions have directed their members to withdraw their services as the unions would resist the sack of any of their members.
The unions declared that the plot by Chevron to sack their members contravenes the agreements reached through the intervention of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.
A national official of NUPENG, Comrade Alex Agwornwor, who spoke on the issue in Port Harcourt, said the plot by Chevron to sack its members in Warri, Lagos and Escravos was shocking as the contending issues were still being negotiated.
He called on the National Assembly, the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Department of State Service, Department of Petroleum Resource (DPR) and other relevant stakeholders to prevail on Chevron to rescind the planned sack of its members.
Also commenting, a labour leader and expert in industrial relations, Comrade Chika Onuegbu, has called for the review of labour laws in the country, especially in the oil and gas sector to address issues of actualisation and unionisation.
Onuegbu made the call while speaking on the planned sack of some workers by Chevron Nigeria Limited.
He said, most of the laws on labour contract staffing guidelines needed to be updated to be in tandem with global best practices.
Onuegbu said the laws should be tailored to address specific challenges in the Nigeria Oil and Gas Sector.
The former Chairman of the Trade Union Congress in Rivers State, called on companies to operate with stipulated labour standards.
