Mariner Wants NIMASA To Stop Sand Dredging On Waterways
A renowned mariner in Rivers State, Mr. Tamuotonye Gad Wakama has appealed to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Ministry of Transportation to stop companies dredging sand on waterways.
Wakama said the continuous dredging in the rivers has caused most of the boat accidents as the companies abandon wreckages in the water.
He spoke with The Tide in Port Harcourt recently while reacting to the causes of accidents in the state.
The operator, who accused the multinational oil companies of dumping debris in the water called on the relevant agencies to arrest and prosecute any companies officials found wanting in this regard.
He said that the dredging companies abandon wreckages of barges and other objects in the water thereby causing accidents and damaging boat engines.
Wakama called on NIMASA and Ministry of Transport to assist and clean-up the debris dumped in the waterways by some unscrupulous elements.
The boat operator appealed to the state government and other relevant agencies to assist revamp the Okrika Jetty that was built by the former Governor, Chief Ada George in 1992 and modernise it with new facilities.
He commended Governor Nyesom Wike for rebuilding the old Okrika Jetty as it would generate more revenue to the state and encourage modern water transportation in the state.
