Abonnema Wharf Residents Charge RSG On Road
Residents of Abonnema Wharf water front in Port Harcourt are calling on the Rivers State Government to intervene and maintain the only road linking the community with the rest of the state capital.
The residents who accused the petroleum truck drivers of damaging the link road to the jetty also decried the poor state of the road linking to the waterfront, making it difficult for other road users.
Chairman, Abonnema Wharf community, Mr. Taribo Benson called on the state government to come to their aid urgently before the road is completely damaged by truck drivers, adding that it is the only road available to the residents.
Benson, who spoke to The Tide yesterday in an interview called on the truck drivers carrying premium motor spirit (PMS) to apply caution when driving into the community and keep the road motorable for other users.
The community chairman thanked the state governor, Chief Nyesom Wike for the laudable projects done in the state, especially the construction of the Abonnema wharf road, the past governments had completely abandoned, but the Wike-led government came and salvaged the community out of their problem.
He also commended the governor for listening to their plight and letting them do their business. Once again, that the past government sold the Abonnema Wharf to a businessman and drove the residents out.
Benson appealed to the governor to keep his promises made to them concerning the rehabilitation of the jetty, erection of street lights, providing life vests and construction of a resting house for passengers while waiting to travel.
Also speaking, Theodore Obazi, an elder in the Abonnema Wharf community thanked the government for the prompt intervention into the crisis they had with the past government operating in the area. “He said we are very happy with the governor and wish him success in the forth-coming governorship election in the State.”
