Electronic Testing Centres: Transport Secretariat Woos Motorists
The Federal Capital Terri
tory (FCT) Transport Secretariat has advised motorists to periodically take their vehicles to its electronic testing centres for test of road worthiness.
Mr Ifeanyi Ughamadu, Head of Public Relations Unit of the secretariat, made this appeal in an interview with Newsmen on Thursday in Abuja.
Ughamadu said that the centres, located at Kugbo on Nyanya Road and Katampe on Kubwa Expressway, were equipped to carry out electronic road worthiness test on vehicles for improved safety.
He stressed the need to sensitise motorists to desist from just paying a fee and getting a certificate of road worthiness without actually subjecting their vehicles to the test.
“Before now, motorists just pay a certain amount to officials and get the certificate without actually testing their vehicles to ascertain their road worthiness.
“We are now sensitising motorists on the need to take advantage of our computerised vehicle testing centres, one on Kubwa road and the other in Kugbo.
“This is an innovation whereby vehicles are tested electronically before they get the road worthiness certificate.’’
He said the need to create awareness for proper road worthy examination was to eradicate avoidable road accidents.
“This is particularly useful to motorists because it will detect a vehicle’s fault electronically; so that they can be promptly fixed, thereby, preventing avoidable road mishaps.
“Commercial vehicles are expected to carry out the test twice in a year while private vehicles will need to do the test once in a year.’’
He urged motorists to cooperate with the secretariat for seamless movement of traffic in the FCT.
