LG Polls: Chairmanship Aspirant Okays RSIEC’s Timetable
A frontline chairman
ship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Chief Sydney Nyeche, says the timetable for the forthcoming local government elections as released by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) is in order, as it is in line with stipulated laws governing the conduct of the elections in the state.
Chief Nyeche, who made the remarks in an interview in Port Harcourt said RSIEC did the proper thing by releasing the timetable for the elections at the time it did.
He further noted that the electoral body met the mandatory 21 days notice, stressing that even if the 21 days was amended to 14 days by the State House of Assembly, there was nothing wrong with that provided the members of the House sat and made such an amendment.
The chairmanship aspirant said the onus now was on RSIEC to put all machinery in place and conduct satisfactory, free, fair and credible elections, and urged the electoral body to learn from the pitfalls and mistakes of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), particularly in the conduct of the just concluded general elections in the state, which he alleged were fraught with irregularities.
He indicated that APC was fully prepared for the May 23 elections, as it was committed to follow to the letter released guidelines for the elections, and called on the people of OBALGA to continue to support and vote for the party, which he said believes in peace instead of violence.
Chief Nyeche promised to change the local government with his vast experience and pedigree if elected, stressing that reduction of youth unemployment through massive job creation would be the priority of his administration.
As an employer of labour, he said he would also do more to transform the entire local government, particularly as somebody that had zero tolerance for corruption.
He further noted that his administration would publish every month the federal allocations and internally generated revenue profile of the local government for public scrutiny.
Said Nyeche, “the people of my local government should have confidence in me. They know my track record. I have majority of the masses at heart.
Infrastructure will be given a face lift. Our pregnant mothers would be given affordable healthcare and allowances. I know how to use money to create wealth.”
