The Delta State office of UNICEF has advised those living in?flood prone areas of Oshimili South Local Government Area to relocate to higher grounds ?to avoid?flood.
The state Director of Information Mr Paul Osahor, gave the advice in Asaba on Monday during an advocacy visit by UNICEF unit of the Ministry of Information on the Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government Council.
Osahor stressed the need for the residents?to heed the advice?of the state government urging them to relocate from lower lands to upper lands to avoid devastating occurrence in the upcoming predicted flood.
He said that the Nigeria Meteorological Agency had predicted more rainfall within the year with potential for flood and its devastating impact.
Osahor also said that the people needed to be prepared for the impending emergency, adding that when such situation occurred, it would be easier for the state government to respond appropriately.
The director said the advocacy visit was “Communication for Development for Flood Victims’’ and added that communication could contribute toward the behavioural imperatives for good preparation and stable living.
Responding, the Chairman of the Council, Mrs Chinwe Monu-Olarewaju, said that she was a victim of the 2012 flood, which ravaged about 14 local government areas in the state.
The chairman, who was represented by her Vice Chairman, Mr?Eloka Aziekwu, said the council was ready to partner with relevant agencies to avoid a re-occurrence of such experience.
Monu-Olarewaju said that UNICEF and the State Universal Primary Education Programme had donated 190 chairs and tables to the flood affected schools in various communities.
She also appealed to UNICEF to look into the economic situation of the country to see how it could?improve the life of the people.
