Council Decries Detention Of Suspects Without Trial
The Legal Aid Council Coordinator in Edo State, Mr Eddy Inenevwo, has criticised the continuous detention of suspects in prison and the delay in their trial.
Inenevwo told newsmen in Benin that there detention was “ travesty of justice, noting: “justice delayed is justice denied’’.
According to him, detaining suspects either in police or prison custody for several months and years without trial was unacceptable.
He spoke ahead of the state Chief Judge, Justice Cromwell Idahosa, planned jail delivery on December 3.
He appealed to the police to always carry out thorough investigations in criminal cases to avoid delays in the trials of suspects who often languished in custody.
He said the law presumes an accused person to be innocent, noting : “keeping an accused in custody without trial is travesty of justice.
Inenevwo expressed regrets that the council was handling a number of cases where the suspects had been in custody for nearly 10 years without trial.
The coordinator in spite of the delay in the trial “the prosecution keeps asking for adjournments with the intention of keeping the suspects in the gulags’’.
He, however, expressed the hope that the jail delivery by the state chief judge would afford him and members of his entourage an opportunity to review some of the awaiting trial cases.
“The visit will definitely help to decongest the prisons; it is also an opportunity to review situations and conditions of inmates in the different prison formations across the state,’’ he said.
