NUT Decries Govt’s Withdrawal Of TSS Payment
The Ebonyi chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT),
has criticised the State Government for withdrawing the payment of Teachers
Salary Structure (TSS) describing the action as ‘unlawful. ’
The State Government stopped payment of the TSS because the
teachers participated in the strike called by Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)
over non-payment of payment of minimum wage. Mr Joseph Nweke, the State
Chairman of the NLC, told The Tide in
Abakaliki that the action of the government was a disservice to teachers in the
state.
“It is regrettable that the government withdrew the payment
of TSS already being enjoyed by Ebonyi teachers.
“The action is affecting the zeal of teachers in the
discharge of their noble profession. Teachers now teach with a non-challant
attitude,’’ he said.
Nweke observed that qualitative and functional education was
a pre-requisite to the development of a nation, adding that teachers were the
tonic needed for attainment of national greatness.
“If teachers are adequately enhanced, they would be
encouraged to give in their best. They should not be treated as underdogs. “
