FRSC Wants Roadside Parks On Highways
Commanding Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in zone 6, Mr Yakubu Attah, has stressed the need for the establishment of roadside parks across the nation’s highways.
He made the suggestion last Thursday in Calabar while on familiarisation tour of the Cross River Command.
Attah said that roadside parks would not only provide opportunity for drivers on long journeys to rest after long hours of driving, but would also help to curtail accidents.
“After driving for long hours, some drivers are exhausted and when they are sleepy, they cause road traffic crashes.”
“So, we are calling on the government to see how it can introduce road side parks so that drivers can park their vehicles and have some hours to rest,’’ he said.
Attah said some highways in Nigeria were very long and took several hours to drive, adding: “this often leaves drivers exhausted.”
“The road from Calabar to Ogoja is a stretch of not less than five and half hours and you are not supposed to drive for two hours without rest.”
The Commanding Officer said the FRSC was working to reduce road accident by 30 per cent by the end of 2015.
“We must beat the United Nations Action decade on road traffic accident by reducing road crashes by 50 per cent.”
Attah commended Gov. Liyel Imoke of Cross River for providing toll truck and vehicles to the state sector command.
