Consultant Tasks RSG, Firms On Housing Schemea
Unhappy over the hardship faced by many retirees at the end of their service in terms of housing and accommodation, particularly those that retired from government service, a property consultant in Port Harcourt, Benjamin Oti, has called on the Rivers State Government and multinational companies to have an annual housing plan for their staff, so as to enable them own houses on or before retirement.
He said the issue of lack of housing or how to pay for accommodation on retirement have dominated the psyche and thinking of many retirees and that many have developed hypertension in the process, and that some had died also, for the same issue.
Speaking in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, Mr. Oti who is the Principal Consultant of Benjamin Oti and Company (an Estate Consultancy firm) and a member of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyor and Valuers (NIESV) explained that some workers resort to embezzle government or company funds so as to enable them build or own their own houses.
According to him “The desire to embezzle or steal money in the office to develop homes will drop, if houses are developed by government. That is why the developed countries go ahead to provide homes for their public sector employees on an easy mortgage arrangement.
Oti, who is a specialist in property management, further explained that it will be a dis-service to a government worker like a top civil servant or a judge who had been living in government apartment while in service, but only to retire without owning a house, and then begin to battle on how to maintain or pay exorbitant house rents.
He said such scenario has caused some heart problem to some retirees while a few have died in the process, because they could no more afford a good place for living, adding that such problems could be averted if government and employers of labour could have good housing policy or plan for their staff.
To that end, Oti therefore urged government to develop a good yearly housing programme for its staff, and also set specific target on the number of houses to be developed on yearly basis, with a good mortgage plan to enable workers own houses of their own.
