Bayelsa PDP Women Allege Maginalisation
The Women Wing of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Bayelsa State has questioned the results of party’s primaries for different political positions which fell short of the 35 per cent for affirmative action.
They faulted the conduct of the party’s primaries in the state, saying it was not in conformity with neither the party’s constitution nor the Electoral Act.
They also queried the non- implementation of the 35% Affirmative Action in the sharing of elective positions and appointment of political positions championed by the wife of the president, Dame Patience Jonathan, saying that it might work against the party in the coming election.
The women said in some areas of the state, the primaries were conducted with total disregard to the provisions of the constitutions of the party and the Electoral Act.
Blaming the leadership of the party in the state for their disposition toward the plight of the women, the group, led by Barrister Josephine Diete-Spiff disclosed that out of the thirty-three elective positions in the state, women could only boast of one, describing the situation as unacceptable.
“Women from Bayelsa State are not satisfied with the outcome of the primaries because we believe that if the foundation is not right, nothing can be right thereafter. For there to be free and fair election, we must get it right from the beginning”,.
“We are, therefore, asking for the full implementation of the 35% Affirmative Action across the board; both in elective and appointive positions as it is done in other countries that have heeded to the practice of greater women participation in governance,” she said.
According to the group, other states have implemented the principle except Bayelsa.
It querried why Bayelsa State is different, when the husband of the initiator, the president of our great Nation, President Goodluck Jonathan and the leader of our great party is from Bayelsa State”.
