…To Construct Solar Energy Housing Units
The Federal Government will soon embark on the construction of 1,200 housing units that will have solar energy components.
Mrs Bahijjahtu Abubakar, National Coordinator of Renewable Energy Programme, told newsmen on Monday in Abuja that the project was being financed by the Federal Ministry of Environment in collaboration with Aso Savings and Loans Plc.
She said the project was aimed at providing affordable energy efficient housing for staff of the ministry.
Abubakar explained that the scheme was designed to incorporate “micro-generation of electricity” from renewable sources such as solar, which would make energy efficient electrical components to impact on the reduction of the resident’s electricity bill.
She announced that 100 million bulbs would be distributed over the next three years under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), through the Nigeria Clean Energy Access Programme (NCEAP).
“This is part of the ministry’s initiative to ensure energy efficiency in the private sector and a national imperative to increase power generation, transmission and distribution,” she added.
Abubakar said the initiative would reduce the global impact of climate change and offer a solution to the epileptic power supply in the country.
She urged state governments, educational institutions and the armed forces to participate in the programme, noting that it would enhance Nigeria’s chances of benefiting from available incentives on the basis of verifiable emission reduction.
