AlICO Insurance Posts Significant Growth
One of the leading insurance companies, America International Insurance Company AlICO has recorded significant growth of 86.7 per cent to N1.19 billion in net profit.
Dr Oludele Fajemirokun, chairman of the company told its shareholders recently that the company was not completely isolated from the effects of harsh economic environment but they were proactive enough to build their business on a solid base.
The company’s gross premium rose from N3.83 billion in 2007 to N5.29 billion in 2008, representing about 37.9 per cent increase.
The company also announced that the flow of exchange last week showed Profit After Tax (PAT) of N1.07 billion as against N575.6 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2008.
In the same vein, Profit Before Tax (PBT) also rose by 86.7 per cent to N1.19 billion from N639.55 million recorded in the comparable period of 2008.
According to Mr Fajemirokun, the company was able to recover from a loss position recorded in 2007 to have a profit before tax of N1.57 billion compared with N186.82 million in 2007 and a corresponding profit after tax of N624.8 million as against N304.7 million achieved in 2007 profit after tax.
The chairman attributed the performance to the company’s risk management efforts and resilience to withstand the turbulence.
Fajemirokun assured shareholders that the company would remain focused on their strategy for innovative product offerings with efficient and excellent customer experience.
The company’s performance outweighed its other contemporaries in the insurance industry as the economy melt-down has reduced some of the insurance stocks to a lowest value.
The company is currently trading at a low of 93 kobo compared to its highest value of N1.96 kobo recorded this year.
The company shareholders’ fund also grew by 98 per cent to N12.5 billion from 2007 figure of N6.3 billion. Total assets also increased 59 percentage from N12.97 billion in 2007 to N20.63 billion recorded in 2008.
Fajemirokun said they are optimistic that a success record would be achieved in the retail business where opportunities are auspicious.
However, he stated that company research and business development team are working assiduously on new products by adopting a blue ocean strategy and exploring other effective distribution models that could complement the conventional network of tied agency network.
The chairman stated lastly that the Nigerian insurance industry will rise up to face the challenges despite the global economic melt down.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
