Council Boss Vows To Unify People Through Sports

The Chairman of Gokana Local Government Council of Rivers State, Hon Monday Dumiye has vowed to unify his people using the instrumentality of sports.
Hon Dumiye made the declaration during the kick-off of Gokana Peace and Unity Football Competition 2024 in Kpor, headquarters of the council.
The council boss said the unity of Gokana cannot be compromised, stressing his government’s determination to replicate what the Rivers state Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara has been doing at the grassroots level.
He hinted that the peaceful nature of Gokana can be sustained through sports, thus, necessitating the football competition among various communities in the local government.
He explained further that youths can garnish their talents through sports, describing sports as a unifying factor.
He said his administration will stop at nothing to bring Gokana together, saying sports can as well be used to stimulate the economy of the area.
“Sports bring our people together. We will deem it necessary to use sports in bringing our peace-loving people together. The peaceful nature of Gokana cannot be compromised. We will do everything possible to sustain it. No doubt, our dear Governor, Siminalayi Fubara means well for Gokana people. As a council, we will continue to replicate what he has been doing at the grassroots level. Governor Fubara is a nan of peace. Gokana people must toe same line by being peaceful so that the dividends of democracy can get to us ,” he declared.
He said Gokana under him will continue to support Governor Fubara to succeed.
The commencement of the chairman’s Peace and Unity Cup titled Dum-Mon 2024 will see 17 wards of Gokana participating. An unprecedented crowd witnessed the official opening of the football competition.
Former Captain of the Super Eagles, Joseph Yobo assurred the council of supporting the youths to earn a living through sports.
Yobo said the youths can do better than him by putting in their best.
He applauded the Gokana chairman for the steps he has taken to better the lot of the youths.
The former Super Eagles defender said Gokana will be a better place if the youths will engage themselves in meaningful activities such as sports.
Dignitaries at the event included the Vice Chairman of the council, councillors, traditional rulers , clerics and sports enthusiasts.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Monokpo Bori expressed gratitude to the chairman for empowering the youths trough sports, and assured that his committee will do its best to achieve the desired objective.
He commended the chairman for his support and logistics in making the event a reality, and urged the youths to showcase their talents and look beyond the competition.
