FG Unveils Framework For Washcom Formation, Management
The Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev has launched a Framework for Water , Sanitation and Hygiene Committee (WASHCOM ) to ensure Sustainable access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene WASH facilities in the country especially in rural areas.
This was contained in a press release made available to The Tide in Port Harcourt.
According to the release, the Minister while performing the ceremony explained that the development and launch of the document was borned out of the need to forestall frequent breakdown and abandonment of Water and Sanitation facilities and to ensure the sustainability of Watee sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities in Nigeria for attainment of SDGs six point one and six point two target.
According to Utsev, given the desire to expand access to WASH services at community levels across the local governments in the country,it became obvious that sustainability of WASH services in rural communities may not be achieved unless the systems for community management as well as community institutions were properly put in place, trained and supported for sustainable management.
According to him, it was in view of this that his ministry with the support of African Development Bank ADB successfully produced the framework geared towards improving management of WASH facilities in the country with sincere hope of increasing the functionality and address challenges facing WASH infrastructure to end open defecation in the country.
Utsev who called on the actors in the water and sanitation sector to take ownership of the document, expressed hope that the collective usage of the framework will help in imbibing the habit of WASH sustainability in the country.
Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation Alhaji Shehu Shinkafi who was represented by Director Water Supply Engr Nicholas Madu , called on stakeholders to work together to ensure sustainable access to WASH facilities for all citizens .
The release signed by Terheme Oraduen personal Assistant to the minister, said that the event was attended by General Managers of State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agencies in the country.
