Foundation Donates Suncare Products To People With Albinism
White Angels Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation, says it has distributed suncare products worth over N5 million to 200 Persons With Albinism (PWAs) in the country.
The foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Ms SussyGold Nzelu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Tuesday that the beneficiaries were mostly poor children with albinism drawn from Edo, Delta, Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Lagos and the FCT.
Nzelu, who listed the products to include sunscreen lotion with SPF 50+, umbrellas, lip balm with SPF 15, hats and body fragrance, added that the group also paid school fees of 22 children with albinism from 2018 till date.
She explained that the donation of the suncare products started in 2018 with plans to expand to more children across the country.
She said “the aim of the free sunscreen products distribution is to prevent sunburn and skin cancers, which are the major skin challenges PWA face in the tropics.
“Sunscreen lotion with high Sun protection Factor (SPF 50+) is effective in protecting the skin of PWAs from harmful effects of the UVA and UVB rays of the sun and from premature ageing.
“The beneficiaries were given sunscreen products twice a year and we hope to expand the gesture, as we organise seminars to educate children with albinism and their parents/guardian on ways to promote healthy living; good skin and eye care”.
She appealed to well-meaning Nigerians and state governments to support PWAs with suncare products and others to enable them to live normal lives.
She added that “we want state governments to subsidise or provide free sunscreen lotion to PWAs, especially children, so that the burden of skin cancer among PWAs will reduce.’’
She commended local and foreign donors for continued support to the foundation.
