I Lost My Sight For Parking Vehicle Close To SARS Car-Petitioner
A 55-year-old bus driver, Mr Nwokoro Nicholas has narrated how he lost his sight due to the beating he received from the operatives of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for parking his bus near a SARS operational vehicle at the premises of Olu Obasanjo Police Division in 2019 where he went to release his sister-in-law on bail at the station.
Nwokoro, appeared to defend his petition before the panel at the resumed hearing of the state Commission of Inquiry into the alleged Acts of Violence, Torture, Brutality, Murder and Violation of the Fundamental Rights of Citizens committed by officers, men and operatives of the Nigerian police in the state, last Wednesday in Port Harcourt.
The 56-year-old bus driver, while giving his evidence before the commission in the dock box, said that while he was returning from Aba to Port Harcourt on that fateful day, he received a call from his wife that his sister-in-law had been arrested, and was being detained at the Olu Obasanjo Police Station.
He added that his wife had advised him to go and see her at the station.
He averred that on getting to the police station, he met his sister-in-law and the IPO handling the matter, and the matter was settled after he took his sister-in-law on bail.
He further told the panel that the crime he committed was because his bus was parked close to the SARS vehicle inside the police station, adding that over five police men pounced on him, and as a result, he lost his eyes during the incident.
“As I came out of the police station and entered my vehicle to drive out, the SARS operatives started heating me from both sides, asking why I should park close to their vehicle. They accused me of having no regard for them. My face was swollen, and the police rushed me to a nearby chemist where I was given first aid. My younger brother drove me home.
“Later, I went to several hospitals in Port Harcourt, and Akwa Ibom State in search of the restoration of my sight but no success until I was referred to a hospital in India where a second operation was carried out on my right eye. That surgery made me to see a little”.
“At the India hospital, they diagnosed that I am suffering from glaucoma due to the injuries from the beating”, he stated.
