Farmer Recounts N20 Million Loss Over Border Closure
The Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer of Is-Real Agro Allied Services Nigeria Company, Eng. Promise Is-Real Agbolu, has said that his farm lost over 58 birds valued at N20 million during the border closure by the federal Government.
Agbolu said this in a chat with newsmen yesterday at the farm premises at Igwuruta-Ali in Ikwerre Local Government Area.
He told newsmen that he suffered the tremendous loss due to death of poultry birds as a result of lack of proper medication.
According to him, some of the medications which came from outside the country, was then restricted due to the boarder closure by the Federal Government.
He pointed out that some of such medications which were sold for about N1,500 now sky-rocketed to N3000 and above, thereby, suffocating the system.
“Just this morning (Sunday) alone, I was informed by my manager that 38 birds have died. Reason, no proper medication. Multiply it by N5000, that is some money”, he said.
The engineer turned farmer further hinted that he was forced to auction good number of the birds in order not to incure further loss.
To him, the re-opening of the lander borders was a good development and should be sustained.
On how to aid farmers in the state, he said that Government must make deliberate effort to locate and identify genuine farmers.
He also suggested availability of loan opportunities for farmers to enable them expand and as well, help the government in the area of employment generation.
H suggested Town Hall meeting between the Government and farmers to enable them chart a way forward and do the needful.
Generally, he rated the season’s sales low over what he described as low circulation of cash.

Blue Economy: Minister Seeks Lifeline In Blue Bond Amid Budget Squeeze

Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is seeking new funding to implement its ambitious 10-year policy, with officials acknowledging that public funding is insufficient for the scale of transformation envisioned.
Adegboyega Oyetola, said finance is the “lever that will attract long-term and progressive capital critical” and determine whether the ministry’s goals take off.
“Resources we currently receive from the national budget are grossly inadequate compared to the enormous responsibility before the ministry and sector,” he warned.
He described public funding not as charity but as “seed capital” that would unlock private investment adding that without it, Nigeria risks falling behind its neighbours while billions of naira continue to leak abroad through freight payments on foreign vessels.
He said “We have N24.6 trillion in pension assets, with 5 percent set aside for sustainability, including blue and green bonds,” he told stakeholders. “Each time green bonds have been issued, they have been oversubscribed. The money is there. The question is, how do you then get this money?”
The NGX reckons that once incorporated into the national budget, the Debt Management Office could issue the bonds, attracting both domestic pension funds and international investors.
Yet even as officials push for creative financing, Oloruntola stressed that the first step remains legislative.
“Even the most innovative financial tools and private investments require a solid public funding base to thrive.
It would be noted that with government funding inadequate, the ministry and capital market operators see bonds as alternative financing.
